Low Cost Coronation Crown

On 6th May 2023 England will see it’s first coronation since 1953 with King Charles III taking to the throne, and do you know what? I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. Saying that I have bought a tin of coronation biscuits, red, white and blue sprinkles and I’ve already organised how and where I’m watching it, so you could say there’s a part of me that’s a bit excited about it and honestly, I don’t know why. But I am.

I know there are lots of craft packs, and decorations out there to buy, but why buy when you can make? My strange excitement for this big event has merged with my crafty veins and today I bring you a low cost coronation crown that you can have fun making yourself using things you can find around your house. Today is less of a how to, and more of a window of inspiration.

Let’s get crafting

What I used:
  • Cardboard from deliveries
  • Eco glitter normally used on my face
  • Wool from left over children’s craft kit
  • Tissue paper from packaging
  • Glue gun from my shelf
  • Stapler from some stationary shop about 15 years ago
  • PVA glue from my shelf
Method

I’m going to be completely transparent with you right now, I made this activity up as I went a long, and unless you’re someone who must function with planning, I suggest you do the same. Pop some music on, and just have fun with it, enjoy the process and who cares about what the final outcome is? For this reason you could do it alone, with friends, with some children, or your dog. As long as you’re having fun and getting a bit messy it doesn’t really matter.

To start with I made a frame using cardboard, creating the band for the crown which fits around my head and then stapling an inner frame work with two other pieces of cardboard in a cross shape. This initially made a cardboard hat. Then I stapled thinner pieces of cardboard at regularly intervals along my frame, stapling them together at the top, before gluing them into the middle of the hat using a hot glue gun so I knew it would be super secure. This created the traditional arching crown shape.

From this point on it was all decorating. I glued on some white tissue paper for no reason other than I fancied it, I made some pom poms using wool from a children’s craft kit that wasn’t needed any more, then I used the off cuts to make some fluffy stars. I made glitter stars too, and a glitter band to go around the top. The only thing I bought was the eco glitter as I didn’t have any and I really wanted it to sparkle, other than that everything came from what I already had in the house, reusing where I could to create as little waste as possible.

And I’ll tell you what, it’s a very comfy crown.

I’d love to see what you end up making, make sure to follow me on Instagram and send me your creations over!
