“Don’t pack anything we haven’t used this year.”
Me to the husband
That was our motto for the first few years of our marriage. As a youth worker taking on roles with small funding, the husband and I found ourselves travelling a lot to live near to the community I would be working in. Lots of house moves meant lots of packing, and with packing came the annual declutter aka the removal of all unwanted items. Nothing came to the new place that we didn’t need, love. or treasure. Fast forward a few years and settled jobs meant settled living, and with settled living came the clutter build up, and with that came the new annual tradition many people around the world take part it…the spring clean.
A big, deep clean and reorganising of the house, helping to relax my mind and bring peace and some sort of temporary order to the house. When I was a child/still to this day, tidying and organising meant getting everything out and as I’d put it away I’d accidentally/on purpose distract myself by playing with long forgotten things. Now I’m apparently a fully fledged grown up, this play time has somehow turned into craft time. Yesterday was day one of our spring clean and turned out to distract me just as much as the others.
As I began to tidy a section of my wardrobe come vanity area, I realised I needed a container, a little tray of some sort to help me organise my day to day creams, oils and the like. With no time to go to the shops and zero patience to wait for an online delivery to arrive, I took to my bin, fabric box and craft supplies to see what I could find. To my delight I discovered a box which was just the right size and an old piece of fabric from one of the children’s clothes. As the tray would be holding some oils I wanted to make sure I would clean up any spills, fortunately a parcel had just arrived in a plastic envelope, perfect!
The whole craft took less than five minutes to make, and all the main materials were things that would have ended up in the bin. I couldn’t be happier with the results.
In three simple steps
What you will need:
- Fabric
- Scissors
- PVA Glue
- Plastic envelope
- Box
- Staple Gun
Method:
- Cut the envelope to size and glue it to the bottom of the the box
- Cut out your fabric, place the box on top of it and fold the material over the box, make sure to tuck in the edges so it doesn’t fray, then staple into place. I started with the long edges first, when it came to the small sides of the box I folded the fabric over like a present. You don’t after to do it this way, it’s just the look I enjoyed.
- Fill your box up with your things.
And you’re done.
It was honestly that simple. Enjoy, and let me know how you get on with your creation.
